Description
The famous Kampiski corner on the Kurfurstendamm in Berlin. The Kampinski business was established here in 1918 and soon became the place of choice to see and be seen in the restaurant that took up the corner at number 27. Destroyed by fire at the end of WW II it was rebuilt by the founder's grandson in 1951 and soon became the defacto Hotel of its time. For the next 20 years it was the only real luxury hotel in Berlin. over the years it has had various partners including Germany's main air carrier Lufthansa and now is a property of an international chain of luxury hotels. Berthold Kampinski would be proud of its enduring iconic status of still seeing and being seen on this corner of Berlin's most prestigious boulevard. I happened to be walking around the neighbourhood of this fantastic city one summer evening and stopped by to have a drink, the atmosphere was relaxing and presented me with one of my favourite pastimes, people watching. I made a few rough napkin sketches and later painted this piece at home.
