Description
A stone stepped walkway in a village in the South of France. I had rented the smallest car I could find and still had to walk most of these village streets while I looked for those sweet spots to paint. What struck me about this spot was the contrasting colours of the Mediterranean blue sky and the warm orange, tanned plastered wall of the narrow walkway. This blue sky colour is not the standard cerulean or cobalt blue, I had to experiment with a number of pigments and finally came up with a combination of Ultramarine and Cobalt blue. I also found that I had to buy the best quality oils I could find in order to keep the sky's luminescence.
The green foliage added to the overall tonal balance perfectly.
