Description
Tuscany has some of my favourite Italian landscape scenes. This Tuscan sky painting with grape vines and rolling hills is near Montepulciano, Italy. Head south from Florence, the colour of the Chianti countryside is green. South from Siena the landscape gradually becomes wilder and less verdant, by the time you reach the Val d'Orcia, in summer at least, it's almost arid. The roads between Siena and the Orcia river offer many twists and turns leading to a bounty of images to paint. The landscape has hilltop villas, groves of olive trees and vine yards around every bend. As I was returning to Siena late in the day I spotted this scene in the rearview mirror and just had to stop and do a reference sketch along with a couple of photos which I used to paint his piece at home in my studio. Typical when working at leisure in a controlled environment, it came out quite tight but overall I am pleased as it conveys the feeling of that wonderful moment in time of a fleeting late warm afternoon in Tuscany.
