The first capitol of Upper Canada, during the War of 1812 was moved to York (Toronto). Originally called Butlersburg, the Town received official status in 1781as Newark, a British military post.
Later it changed name again, this time to Niagara & in the 1880's became
known as Niagara-on-the-Lake which is now a year round world tourist and Shaw Theatre destination. It still boasts of many original 1700 and 1800 houses along with the historical Laura Seacord settlement and world entertainment festival events.

The area is also a great wine growing region due to its location below the Niagara escarpment and bordering Lake Ontario. The Prince of Wales Hotel is a landmark and is the defacto town centre where one can catch a horse and carriage ride year roundes.
