Description
Lake Erie is one of the most unpredictable bodies of water I know of.
Many a mariner has sailed his final voyage on this the shallowest of the Great Lakes.
I have been in seas on this lake and have learned to respect the warnings of old timers
who have made their living from her once bountyfull harvests.
It's SW to NW orientation allows the prevailing winds to skim over almost 300 miles ( 388km) of open water and combined with it's relatively shallow depth can create some dangerous waves similar to the kind one finds breaking on beaches.
When a storm front comes in it is not uncommon to see 30 + foot waves breach the eastern half of the lake, striking fear in the hearts of the most seasoned mariners and often forcing ships 1000 ft. long to seek shelter in the safer waters of Long Point Bay a natural outcropping on the Canadian side north shore. There are many old historic wrecks strewn over the lake's bottom which are a constant challenge for those who dive and search for these wrecks in the lake's shifting sands. In painting this scene I chose what could surely have transpired during one of these storms during the 1800s.
