It was primarily designed to intercept Russian Bombers coming over the North Pole. The US actually helped Canada develop it by lending support for testing but competed when NATO members wanted to buy it in place of US planes :(

Beautiful work Michael. Since it could outperform the Phantom jet that had been used in Viet Nam years later, many people in Canada say that the US forced Canada to dismantle the Avro Arrow. Then as now, the US has wanted to be at the forefront of weapons technology, which is still one of its biggest businesses.

The AVRO ARROW was Canada's (fly by wire) commitment to NATO during the 1950's. This state of the art machine was to intercept threats to America comming from over the North Pole.
Setting many speed & climb-to-height records using P&W 6,500 lbs. thrust engines, it became the victim of cost over runs and missel technology, I chose to paint the last completed air frame that SHOULD have flown with it's 29,000 lbs. thrust Canadian designed and built Iroqouis engines but was scrapped and totally destroyed by that days short sighted conservative government, imagine what it would have done for our high tech industries if we had kept a few of them flying for shows?

In 1959 as a kid in Sea Cadets we flew over the spot call Death Row on our way to Halifax in an old Trans Canada Air North Star. I can still recall the stewardess panicking when we all got out of our seats to look down at the row of partially dismantled Arrows as we lifted off from the old Malton airport now YYZ. Th...

Heritage Gallery, Laguna, CA I'm often told; "Your art is so real looking why not just take a photo"? Well yes, if I could not draw I probably would, however a photo rarely reflects the three dimensional world we experiences, how often have you been disappointed that your photograph did not turn out as you expected? Let me explain; in a three dimensional world we see things subjectively, photographs can only capture a split second of any scene which often disappoints and is the main reason...
