Artist's Description
"Oh, I have slipped the surly bounds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings:
Sunward I've climed and joined the tumbling mirth

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air .........."
(John Gillespie Magee - RCAF 1940)
I have painted a number of aircraft scenarios but this one is one of my favourites, inspired by Magee's 1940 WWII famous poem.
He hailed from Guelph On, Canada, a few miles from my home town, and flew for the RCAF but sadly was killed during that conflict. His inspirational words along with the beautiful Supermarine Spitfire just begged me to paint it.
