Artist's Description
A typical door in french village of St.Tropez, the sun drenched stone steps and the beautiful climbing vines are a standard landscape of the Cote d'Azur and the Mediterranean region of Provence. In painting this piece I was struck by the direct vertical sunlight, it seemed to make the old hand laid stone wall glow while the steps seemed almost too hot to step on. Here in in the northern latitudes of North America this kind of light only happens for a couple of weeks during the summer soultice in June and even then can not quite match the Mediterranean atmosphere.
Some say it's the Mistral Winds, a phenomenon when the Sahara's wind blows across the warm Mediterranean waters from Africa creating an atmosphere that makes a unique quality of light.
Whatever the reason, artists have been drawn to these landscapes for centuries.
