Description
A gondola ride through the back canals of Venice reveals many hidden architectural treasures. The backwater canals of Venice reveal the true character of this famous city by the Adriatic Sea once a proud independent Republic which controled much of the commerce from the far east to Europe in turn becomming rich and powerfull in its time. Glimpses of former wealth can still be found in many of the smaller canals that criss cross the varior districts of this intresting Italian landscape or should I say waterscape. Buildings dating from the 13th to 18th century still harbour ornate and creative details within their fading facates which can only be truly apprciated by taking a gondola ride through these "streets" of Venice. This is a small painting I did shortly after such a ride through Cannaregio district ending by the Fish Market on the Grand Canal close to the Rialto Bridge.
