A private spot on the Grand Canal in Venice. When I was asked to paint this, I was struck by the profusion of green trees along the historic Grand Canal near the famous Rialto Bridge, a place known more for its water than foliage. In this Italian Disney Land city, there are trees but very few yards are as well endowed as this one was. The owners of this Venician Grand Canal oasis know a thing or two about life style and relaxing. In my quest to paint private estates, few places conjure up more historic emotions than this jewell on the Adriatic. To imagine that Marco Polo, Casanova and other famous historic names once inhabited these same narrow canals and walkways, blows me away every time. In painting this, I took notice of the weathered brickwork and plaster that time erodes yet give this city its unique patina.
