Description
My original study for the painting commission for RAF Air Vice Marshall Johnnie Johnson. The Supermarine IX (#NE398 ) Spitfire was one of the most graceful aircraft built during WWII. This painting was commissioned by England's leading WWII ace Johnnie Johnson, later becoming Britain's Air Vice Marshall.
Johnson took command of No. 144 Wing (Canadians) based at RAF Kenley. They received the new Spitfire IX: the answer to the German's Fw 190 which outmanouvered many of the older version Spitfires. Being a Wing Commander (Wingco) now meant his initials could be painted on the machine. His Spitfires now carried JE-J. His call sign was "Greycap". Rather than show a battle scene, I chose to paint a more serene image matching the beautyful lines of this great aircraft. This piece resulted in the release of a series of Johnsosn's hand signed prints.
