Description
South of Vence, France lies the medieval village of Saint Paul de Vence, I walk trough the narrow cobble stoned passageways, my mind adrift in these historical alleys with thoughts of it's past. The sun is hot and I'm trying to find something to paint worthy of those who came before and built these marvelous Cote d' Azure stone structures. Suddenly there it is, built in 1615 by a stonemason named Martil Malchoir on rue Grande,The Fountain!. Listed on France's historic registry it stands alone in it's own little area. I set up my easel oblivious to the throng of tourists passing by and start to sketch wondering if Malchoir had an audience watching each stone he laid. The world has turned enough to let the sunlight give just the right dimension to the scene and I work diligently to catch the fleeting shadows and masses before the light changes, it seems beauty never lasts long. The village with it's ramparts and maze of narrow streets is also a center for the arts with many art galleries and gift shops not to mention cafes. Near by is the Foundation Meaght which houses a large collection of historical paintings, sculptures and prints along with constantly changing contemporary art shows. I plan to paint as many of these Provence landscape scenes as possible while there for my one man show in Vence.
